Introduction
It's fascinating how our digital appendages have not just altered our means of communication, but also shaped our identities, our perception of self, and how we interact with the world around us. But, what if we were to step away from our smartphones, to disconnect from the ceaseless barrage of notifications, calls, texts, and emails? Who would we find at the other end of that disconnection?
Recently, I had an enlightening experience while visiting the Denver Zoo with my wife. As we strolled among the exhibits, my only companion was my Light Phone 2, a minimalist device designed solely for basic phone functionality, without the constant distractions of a typical smartphone. My wife, who has observed me for years navigating life tethered to smart devices, noticed a significant shift in my behavior. "You are a different person without smart devices around," she commented.
These words stirred up a whirlpool of thoughts. They challenged the impact of our reliance on technology and urged an exploration into the profound transformation that occurs when we choose to untether ourselves from our digital chains. This post is a reflection on that exploration, a journey from pixel to person. So, let's dive in and uncover the unique metamorphosis that takes place when we disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with our authentic selves.
Section 1: Imagine the Person, Forget the Pixels
The ubiquitous smartphone, despite its undeniable conveniences, has a way of usurping our time, attention, and ultimately, our lives. In its absence, imagine the myriad of possibilities that open up before you. Consider the long-abandoned hobbies and unexplored interests you could pursue, freed from the constant beck and call of your digital companion. The activities that would become integral to your day wouldn't be dictated by online trends but would be those that genuinely fascinate you. Suddenly, you have the time to immerse yourself in that riveting novel, try your hand at watercolor painting, or delve into the mesmerizing world of astrophotography.
Reflect on the relationships that could blossom in the space created by the absence of a smartphone. Consider the people you would seek out, not via an instant message, but in person, engaging in real, enriching conversations. Your attention wouldn't be split between the person in front of you and the persistent pinging of your device, but fully present, offering them the gift of your undivided attention. The depth of such encounters, unmediated by screens, has the potential to strengthen the bonds we share, enhancing our social experiences and contributing to our overall well-being.
In envisioning a life without the constant companionship of a smartphone, think about the personal goals you could accomplish. With the web's distractions at bay, time seems to expand, allowing you the freedom to work on personal projects, start a small business, or even dedicate yourself to learning a new skill or language. Imagine stepping into a pottery class, each spin of the wheel disconnecting you further from the digital and connecting you deeper with the physical, tangible world. Or immersing yourself in a language course, embracing not just the syntax, but the rich cultural tapestry woven through its phrases and idioms. Such pursuits speak to a more intrinsic part of our identity, encouraging growth and fulfillment that stem from within rather than from digital validation. The person you become, thus, is not a product of digital algorithms, but of your authentic passions and meaningful experiences.
Here are the suggested steps for this section:
Identify Genuine Interests: Take some time to identify the hobbies and activities you would like to pursue if you had more time free from digital distractions. Whether it's reading, painting, gardening, cooking, or anything else that genuinely fascinates you, make a list and commit to incorporating one of these activities into your routine every week.
Prioritize Personal Connections: Set aside specific times during the week for in-person interactions (what I call offline time zones) with family and friends. These could be simple activities such as a shared meal, a walk in the park, or a casual chat over coffee. During these times, make a conscious effort to be fully present and engaged in the conversation, setting aside all digital distractions.
Set Personal Goals: Reflect on the personal goals that you've been wanting to achieve but have been putting off due to lack of time or focus. This could be starting a small business, joining a class or workshop, learning a new language or skill, or even dedicating time to physical fitness. Write these goals down, break them into manageable tasks with a reasonable timeline, and start working on them in the newfound time you have by reducing your smartphone use.
Section 2: Create an Environment That Supports the Person, Not the Pixels
A critical aspect of creating an environment that supports the person over the pixels involves establishing designated spaces for work, enjoyment, and digital activities. This separation of physical spaces can significantly assist your brain in associating specific areas with distinct activities, thereby helping it to detach from the constant pull of technology. For instance, designating a specific room or corner of your home as a 'tech-free zone' can create a sanctuary where you can unwind, engage in hobbies, read, meditate, or simply enjoy a quiet cup of coffee. In contrast, a separate space for work helps maintain focus and productivity without distractions. Additionally, setting aside a specific area for digital activities like checking emails or engaging in social media can confine the digital intrusion to a certain space and time, preventing it from permeating all aspects of your life. This spatial division not only helps reduce unnecessary screen time but also fosters a more mindful, balanced approach to digital technology use.
Furthermore, transitioning to a lifestyle that prioritizes the person over pixels involves not just a change in mindset, but also a significant shift in the tools we use. One of the key steps in this journey is considering the adoption of more basic, function-specific devices. A 'dumbphone', such as the Light Phone 2 or Sunbeam F1, can serve as an excellent tool in this transition. Other options like middle-of-the-ground devices like the Xiaomi F21 Pro or the Jelly 2 with its tiny screen can aid in the journey. Stripped of the myriad distractions that a conventional smartphone harbors, a basic phone allows you to stay connected without constantly pulling you into a vortex of notifications and apps. Middle-ground devices like the Jelly 2 while having smartphone functions make it harder to enjoy due to its form factor (something I touch on in this chapter of my book).
The journey doesn't have to stop there. It can extend to incorporating other single-purpose devices into our lives, thereby reducing our reliance on the multi-faceted, attention-demanding smartphone. This could involve resurrecting your old iPod for music, purchasing a standalone GPS device for navigation, or even opting for a traditional wristwatch to keep track of time. Each of these devices serves a specific purpose and nothing more, thus helping us escape the endless cycle of distraction that typically accompanies smartphone use.
Lastly, it's essential to consciously evaluate and determine what digital devices still hold a place in this new vision for your life. This requires a thoughtful examination of the purpose each device serves and whether it aligns with or detracts from the goals and lifestyle you outlined in the first section. Remember, the aim isn't to completely eliminate all digital technology from your life but to curate a digital environment that supports your personal development, fosters meaningful connections, and ultimately aligns with your new identity, free from the unnecessary distractions of the smartphone era.
Suggested steps for this section:
Identify a Simple Phone Alternative: Start researching different models of dumbphones or basic functionality phones that fit your needs. Look for features that align with your needs but do not draw you back into the trap of constant connectivity.
Add Single-Purpose Devices: Purchase single-purpose devices, such as an MP3 player for music or a stand-alone GPS for navigation. These will reduce your dependence on the smartphone for these functions, furthering your disconnection.
Establish Clear Zones: Assign specific spaces in your home for work, leisure, and digital activities. Create a "tech-free zone" for relaxation and hobbies, a productive workspace for work, and a confined space for necessary digital tasks. This will help train your brain to associate specific spaces with their corresponding activities, aiding in your digital detox.
Section 3: Live Fully as a Person
Living fully as a person means stepping into the world, not as a digital entity, but as a real, tangible human being, with the capacity for authentic experiences and interactions. This transformation starts by taking a leap of faith - stepping out of your comfort zone and going about your day without a smartphone. The initial disconnect might feel jarring, like stepping into an alien world. However, once the initial shock wears off, you'll discover a heightened sense of awareness and a newfound appreciation for the tangible world around you.
Commit to this experiment and give yourself the chance to fully experience the world without the pixelated lens of your smartphone. Take a walk in the park, sit in a café, visit a museum - whatever piques your interest. Engage in conversations with people, immerse yourself in nature, or simply sit and observe the world passing by. You'll find that your interactions are more present and meaningful, and your experiences are richer and more fulfilling when you're not constantly interrupted by digital distractions.
The key to living fully as a person is ongoing introspection and adjustment. Regularly evaluate how you're spending your time and energy. Are you meeting the goals outlined in Section 1? Are there adjustments to be made to your environment, as suggested in Section 2? Are the hours you're spending on digital devices truly necessary, or could they be better spent elsewhere? Always remember that time is a finite resource, and it's essential to use it in a way that contributes to your overall well-being and personal growth. As you continue this journey from pixel to person, remember to celebrate the small victories, learn from the setbacks, and most importantly, be patient with yourself. Changing a deeply ingrained habit is not easy, but the rewards - a more present, fulfilling, and balanced life - are well worth the effort.
Here is my ideal life as of today (although it will change!). I invite you to seek something similar that helps you in the exploration of the deep life.
Conclusion
